The Shards

The First (Light)

(Writeup on Shadowbringers)

The Second (Fire)

The cause of the Third Umbral Calamity was the rejoining of this Shard. The event was most aptly timed to the humans, who were discovering the hubris of corrupt religion and believed themselves to be under a punishment from the Gods for their hubris. Thanalan itself sprung from a formerly lush area that was razed to desert by the force of these violent wildfires. It is said that the sun also grew in size for a time, causing the world to heat up immensely and lead to famine. What caused it to return to normal is unknown.

The Third (Earth)

The fourth to rejoin, this Shard ushered in the Fourth Umbral Calmity as a result. The foundation of the later events of Dalamud's Moon were begun during this time, as Allag struggled to revitilize its' flagging empire by means of using Bahamut's Aether to tear open the voidgate that would allow Cloud of Darkness to invade the world.

However, the Calamity caused the earth itself to collapse, sinking the tower into the ground and dooming the Allagan Empire. Much of Eorzea suffered great catastrophic reformation at this time due to the violent tremors that outright brought mountains to the ground and separated continents.

The Fourth (N/A)

This Shard has yet to be encountered.

The Fifth (Wind)

The first Shard to rejoin to the Source. It caused the First Umbral Calamity, which is believed to be what drove most of the moogles to the ground.

The Sixth (Ice)

Little is known of the era in which this Shard rejoined. It began an ice age that allowed the Miqo'te to migrate across the frozen seas to escape the exile caused to them by the Allagans. Constantly devastated by ice storms, most of the world was frozen and few records exist of this time - even how long it lasted.

The Seventh (Unaspected, Astral)

(Write up on the Seventh Umbral Calamity)

The Eighth (N/A)

This Shard has yet to be encountered.

The Ninth (N/A)

This Shard has yet to be encountered.

The Tenth (Water)

The devastating floods caused by the sixth Shard to rejoin were the cause of the destruction of Mhach and Nym. The Void Ark was built as a way to escape this massive deluge. Though this disaster was believed to be caused by the Wars of the Magi misusing White and Black Magic, the truth is that it was the work of the Ascians. Red Magic was invented as a result of this, as an attempt to avoid the devastation wreaked by Black and White magic, but proved too difficukt to master and swiftly vanished into history.

Ala Mhigo was founded as a result of this disaster, as fleeing survivors lost in the darkness of the floods followed a comet to the safety that would become their new home. Sharlayan was also an eventual result of this, as one of the Twelve Archons sailed his ship to Eorzea to rescue as many people as possible, then fled the waves with them. Though their journey was frought, they wound up sailing for so many years that their descendants would found Sharlayan.

The Eleventh (N/A)

This Shard has yet to be encountered.

The Twelfth (Lightning)

The second Shard to rejoin to the Source, during the earliest age of tools when mankind was first trying to assert itself and struggling for territory. Its' lightning-based aether spurred the growth of countless volcanoes that sent the world into a long-term darkness. A year and a day of non-stop lightning drove the people of Hydaelyn underground. This was the birthplace of magic, where the desperate peoples' prayers gave form to amateur incantations.
